Dr Mark Weatherall
MB BChir FRCP Edin
SPECIALTY Neurology
SUB-SPECIALTY + SPECIAL INTEREST Management of Headaches
PROFILE
Dr Mark Weatherall MB BChir FRCP Edin sees patients with headaches, migraines and other neurological disorders at The Medical Chambers Kensington. His main interests are the diagnosis and management of chronic migraine, medication overuse headache, facial pain and secondary headaches associated with systemic (general) disorders. He is a pioneer of new techniques of headache management such as greater occipital (back of head) nerve injections and the use of Botox, and is one of the very few Consultant Neurologists in the UK with genuine subspecialist interest and expertise in the management of headaches.
He is a Consultant at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (Charing Cross Hospital) and runs the Princess Margaret Migraine Clinic there. He also has a busy general neurology practice at Ealing Hospital NHS Trust, covering all areas of neurology, including TIA (Transient Ischaemic Attack) and stroke, MS, Parkinson's disease and epilepsy. He spent twelve months as a clinical research fellow with Professor Peter Goadsby and Dr Holger Kaube of the Headache Group at the Institute of Neurology in London.
Mark says "I am interested in headaches of all kinds, from the common (migraine or tension-type headaches) to the esoteric (cluster headache and hemicranias of various varieties). I am particularly keen to help people with chronic headaches, who have often been given up on by previous healthcare providers. For these people, correct diagnosis and perseverance in exploring all treatment possibilities nearly always gets them better in the end. My approach combines the timeless virtues of compassion and clinical sense, with knowledge derived from cutting edge research in the neurosciences. Patients can expect to be well informed about their neurological condition, and all the options for a holistic but scientific approach to treatment."
Mark has published many papers in international medical journals and has spoken on these subjects at meetings of the International Headache Society, European Headache Federation and Migraine Trust, and the Association of British Neurologists. He also regularly provides expert opinion on headaches for newspapers as diverse as The Times, the Daily Mail¸ and The Sun, and radio programmes such as 'You and Yours', and 'Woman's Hour'.
