Podiatry deals with the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of foot, ankle and lower limb disorders. As we age, and our bodies change, the demands we place on our feet and joints also change. Podiatrists are qualified to treat Patients of all ages. From children to the elderly.
There is a lot of confusion about the difference between a Podiatrist and a Chiropodist. Podiatrists are Foot and Ankle Specialists who train full time for 3 or 4 years to obtain a degree in Podiatric Medicine. After graduating, many Podiatrists go on to specialise in the study of walking and running (biomechanics), diabetes, rheumatology, dermatology and children's foot care (podopaediatrics).
Chiropodists are qualified to treat common problems such as corns, callouses, verrucae and nail conditions.
Podiatrists and Chiropodists are part of the same profession and in the UK the titles are interchangeable. However, Podiatry is the internationally recognised qualification needed to deliver all aspects of foot care and involves the higher academic training and advanced skills needed to specialise in foot surgery, anaesthetics and prescription of medicines and biomechanics.
Here at The Medical Chambers, Vas Shah treats a very wide range of foot problems including:

Your feet are your foundation so we recommend that you see your Podiatrist at least once a year. In the meantime, you can help maintain healthy feet by following a few simple rules. Wash your feet every day and dry them thoroughly. Wear only good quality, well-fitting cotton socks. And always use the correct shoe for every sport and every surface. As usual, the web contains a lot of useful information and you can do no better than visit these:
The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists
American Podiatric Medical Association
Australian Podiatry Association
If you are interested in the more technical aspects of your feet then we suggest you have a look at this www.jfootankleres.com.
