Hormones + Glands (Endocrinology)
Our Endocrinologist, Dr Katie Wynne, is here to help you understand how your hormones affect you and discover whether any imbalance may be contributing to your symptoms. This will help her suggest the most suitable treatment for you.
What Are Hormones? Hormones are chemical messengers that travel in your blood from one area of the body to another. There is a large collection of hormones that affect every bodily function, from the regulation of periods to appetite, digestion and sugar levels to emotional moods, kidney function, heart rate and energy levels. This branch of medicine is known as Endocrinology.
How Can Hormones Impact Health? When hormone levels are abnormal, or the glands that produce hormones are not working efficiently, a number of health problems can arise. Issues specific to women include fertility problems, irregular periods, mood swings, PMS (premenstrual tension), breast tenderness, multiple cysts on the ovaries (polycystic ovary syndrome) or difficulties with menopause. Hormone dysfunction can be linked with weight gain and obesity, low libido and diabetes.
Your Personal Hormone Profile We carry out a hormone MOT, from a simple blood sample that helps us assess the function of hormone producing glands including your ovaries, adrenal and thyroid glands.
We may recommend an ultrasound scan of your pelvis so that we can observe the activity of your ovaries, which are your body's main producers of oestrogen, and other organs in your pelvis. This is particularly useful when symptoms are related to menstrual problems, pelvic pain or fertility difficulties and is carried out here by Mr Bill Smith, one of the UK's most respected pelvic ultrasound specialists.
How We Treat Hormone Imbalance + Gland Dysfunction Treatment needs to be tailored to your particular circumstances. Many women respond well to Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) but this is not the only option: nutrition and changes to lifestyle, including exercise, weight loss or stress reduction, can make a huge difference. Our ethos at TMCK is rooted in individual care; we're here to listen to you, and deliver the treatment that works for you in the context of your life.
