Profile
Lauri-Ann is a children’s doctor with many years’ experience at London's top teaching hospitals. She treats the full range of paediatric conditions and specialises in paediatric allergy problems and urticaria/hives.
She ensures that she is conversant with the latest general paediatric and neonatal practice for common problems, infections and routine health needs, including vaccination and travel advice. She sees infants, children and young people up to 18 years of age.
Dr Van der Poel (often called Dr Lauri) has practised for the last decade at Evelina London Children’s Hospital, a world-leading paediatric allergy, academic and research centre, and the largest children's allergy service in the UK. Dr Lauri worked in all areas of allergy, including complex food allergy and prevention, allergic rhinitis, asthma, atopic eczema and gastroenterology, covering or practising alongside the team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. Her experience also includes work in drug and venom allergy clinics at St Mary’s Hospital. She understands the potential impact and significance of allergy, chronic urticaria and other recurrent problems on children and their families’ well-being. Her experience and caring approach have been further enriched by her participation as a children’s allergy and urticaria expert in various primary care and specialist settings, including dietetic, psychology and charity-organised parent workshops.
She graduated as a doctor from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, with distinction, finishing among the top graduates of her year and as winner of the psychiatry medal. She then trained in paediatrics, paediatric allergy, infectious disease and immunology at some of London’s leading teaching hospitals, including St Mary's Hospital, part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, Great Ormond Street Hospital, and more.
Having completed an MSc in Allergy at Imperial College in 2014, she was invited back as a lecturer. She has been active as a tutor, mentor and examiner for undergraduate students and visiting clinical fellows in allergy, as well as a tutor for those undertaking their paediatric clinical examinations at Imperial, UCL and King’s College.
Dr Lauri believes in optimising health and wellness through empowering patients and harnessing technology platforms and innovations. She has worked on finding ways to bring the latest research and health data to her patients for more holistic health. She was a co-founder of the development of a cloud-based platform to personalise diet for several clinical settings, starting with food allergies. This led to an ongoing interest in digital innovation and optimising wellbeing from early childhood.
Dr Lauri has lectured and collaborated on publications, both nationally and internationally, on food allergy and chronic urticaria, as well as on mobile and digital health.
