Professor Nicola Maffulli is widely recognised as one of the world's most eminent Consultant Orthopaedic and Sports Injury Surgeons.  He is responsible for pioneering several revolutionary new procedures and techniques in foot and ankle surgery regularly taking care of elite and professional athletes in many sports including soccer, rugby, track and field, martial arts and cricket.  Professor Maffulli practises in The Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Clinic at TMCK, and specialises in lower limb tendon and ligament problems. 

Professor Maffulli is the Professor of Sport Medicine at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, where he is Director of The Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine. His NHS practice is based at Newham University Hospital, where he sees larger numbers of Patients with sport injuries of the lower limb, acute and chronic tendon injuries, knee and foot and ankle surgery ailments. He takes care of Patients with anterior cruciate ligament surgery and of young athletic Patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, foot and ankle.

Professor Maffulli carries out much of his surgery using minimally invasive techniques, including arthroscopy and percutaneous surgery of the foot, using techniques that he has researched and developed.

He has been published widely in highly regarded international medical journals and has led several clinical trials in Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. Professor Maffulli has published 12 books and has won 13 national and international prizes for his work in this specialist area, including the Smith and Nephews Richards Research and Travel Award for the British Orthopaedic Association, 22nd Instructional Course in 1993 for his work on Patterns of meniscal tears in anterior cruciate deficient knees in athletes. The prize for 1996 Best Basic Sciences paper for his work Effects of pulsed magnetic and electromagnetic fields on experimental in vivo acute Achilles tendonitis in the rat. Manila, Philippines. 24-27 January 1996.

  • Prize winner of the 1999 World Congress on Surgery Durban South Africa  with the article Intramedullary nailing of multiple long-bone fractures at the same sitting: A single centre experience
  • Prize winner of the 2002 European Spine Society Clinical Science Award with the article Mechanical stability of scoliosis constructs using variable numbers of sublaminar wires
  • Prize winner of the 2002 Welsh Orthopaedic Society Award with the paper Longitudinal skin traction for the management of displaced supracondylar fractures in children
  • Prize winner of the 2002 Naughton Dunn Club Award with the paper Skin traction for the management of displaced supracondylar fractures in children
  • Recipient of the West Midlands NHS Innovation Award for Minimally invasive hip screw insertion

  • Prize winner for the 2006 Aircast-BASEM Research Award for the paper Arthroscopic single row and double row suture anchor repair for rotator cuff tears. A randomised controlled trial
  • Prize winner for the 2007 BASEM/DJO Basic Science Research Award for the paper Gene expression and collagens, proteoglycans, MMP-2, MMP-9 and TIMPs in human Achilles tendon rupture
  • Prize winner for the 2007 AOUK Research Prize for the paper Reduced duration of cephalosporin prophylaxis for femoral neck fracture surgery is associated with a lower rate of Clostridium difficile-associated disease
  • Recipient of the Hughston Award for the best paper published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine in 2007 for Equivalent clinical results of arthroscopic single row and double row suture anchor repair for rotator cuff tears. A randomised controlled trial
  • Recipient of the Achilles Award of the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at the 7th Biennial meeting. Osaka, Japan, 5-9 April 2009

 

Prof Maffulli has been the Recipient of the ESSKA (European Society of Surgery of the Knee, Arthroscopy and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine) Travelling Fellowship for 1997; of the ABC (American, British, Canadian) Travelling Fellowship to North America for 1998; and of the Aircast-BASM Travelling Fellowship to Australia in Sports Medicine for 1999.

He has been the Godfather for the Patellofemoral Travelling Fellowship in 2010.
