PRP Injections

What are PRP injections?

PRP stands for platelet rich plasma treatment, famously known as the ‘vampire facelift’. It’s is a revolutionary skin treatment that harnesses your body’s natural healing powers to slow down or even reverse skin ageing.

In PRP treatment, your consultant cosmetic dermatologist takes a sample of your blood. They then processes the blood to extract and concentrate the platelets and plasma and reinjects it into your skin.

The injected platelet rich plasma boosts your skin volume and increases skin repair to make your complexion dewy and plump.

What do PRP injections treat?

Our bodies have an incredible ability to repair and regenerate damaged tissue. PRP injections uses this healing capacity to treat skin ageing. Our consultants use PRP injections to address the early signs of skin ageing on the face, neck and decolletage including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Skin crepiness.
  • Slight skin sagging.
  • Dull and tired-looking skin.

Your recovery from PRP injections

You will have minimal downtime following PRP injections. You can get straight back to work and normal activities.

You may notice redness, bruising and small bumps for a few days after treatment. These usually settle quickly, leaving you with firm youthful skin.

Applying cold packs can reduce pain and swelling. It can also help to sleep with your head raised on 2-3 pillows to prevent swelling and bruising.

What happens in PRP injections?

Before the procedure, your consultant will apply topical anaesthetic to numb your skin and reduce discomfort.

Your consultant will take a 10-20ml sample of your blood. As you wait, they will process this to extract and concentrate the plasma and platelets. Using a fine needle, your consultant will then reinject the platelet-rich plasma into your skin in a series of shallow injections.

Platelets contain proteins that heal damaged tissue. When injected into your skin, they release these growth factors. The proteins boost collagen production and encourage your body to lay down fat under your skin. The treatment is progressive; over a few weeks, the treatment plumps your skin, increases skin cell growth and repairs and restores a youthful glow.

PRP injection preparation

Proper preparation before PRP injections can reduce bruising, speed up your recovery and improve your results. We recommend that you:

  • Stop taking blood-thinning medicines such as aspirin and ibuprofen for one week before treatment to prevent bruising and bleeding.
  • Don’t drink alcohol for twenty-four hours before and after treatment.
  • People with bleeding disorders, liver disease, platelet deficiency, or on anticoagulant medication should not have PRP treatments.

Complications of PRP injections

PRP injections are generally safe and there are few side-effects. You may notice:

  • Bruising: this is usually minor and settles over a few days.
  • Lumps and soreness at the injection site.
  • Swelling and puffiness: this usually settles over the first few days.
  • Itching: some people may have itching that usually resolves without treatment.
