Microdermabrasion

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a medical form of mechanical exfoliation to remove the outer layers of dead skin and reveal the smoother, clearer skin below. It’s a deeper and more controlled version of home exfoliation that can leave your complexion brighter and fresher.

You may notice a difference from one treatment but a course of six sessions, followed by maintenance every four to six weeks provides optimum results.

What can microdermabrasion treat?

Microdermabrasion treatment resurfaces the skin to provide an instant glow. The procedure also encourages cell renewal to improve your skin’s texture and elasticity to give younger looking skin.

Microdermabrasion can help if you’re concerned about fine lines and wrinkles, superficial scarring, uneven skin tone or sun damage, spots and blackheads. A course of microdermabrasion can also rejuvenate and restore tired, dull and lifeless complexions.

Microdermabrasion is one of several ways of resurfacing the skin, removing dead skin and improving the appearance. Alternatives include chemical peels. Your consultant will discuss the best treatment for your skin.

What happens in microdermabrasion?

The procedure is usually pain-free and there is no need for anaesthetic.

Your consultant will use a hand-held device to pass fine aluminium crystals over the skin at high speed, through a vacuum. The crystals are immediately sucked away back through the vacuum, taking the top layer of dead skin cells with them. They will tailor the treatment to your skin’s needs, altering the crystal size and the level of exfoliation to achieve your treatment goals.

Recovery from microdermabrasion

You will have minimal downtime following microdermabrasion. You can get straight back to work and normal activities. However, you should avoid intense heat from jacuzzies, saunas, hot baths and vigorous exercise for twenty-four hours.

Your skin may be red and you may notice flakiness and peeling for the first few days after treatment. Following microdermabrasion, your skin may be in a better condition to absorb and respond to your usual skin creams, so discuss applying anti-ageing or acne creams with your consultant.

After any resurfacing therapy, your skin is especially vulnerable to sunlight, so make sure you protect it with sunblock, even in cloudy Britain.

Complications from microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is generally safe and there are few side-effects. You may notice:

  • Redness, swelling and skin shedding.
  • Bruising, particularly if you have delicate skin or take aspirin or other blood-thinning medication.
  • Resurfacing treatment can cause pigmentation irregularities, especially in people with darker skin tones.
