Gynaecology ultrasound scans: FAQs

It can be worrying and debilitating if you are suffering from gynaecological symptoms – such as abnormal bleeding, recurring pelvic pain or fertility issues. The first step is often to have an ultrasound scan to help diagnose your condition and begin a carefully worked-out treatment plan.

We have fast access appointments available with no referrals needed. Your scans and a detailed report are immediately available for either your GP or specialist to access digitally, or you can make an appointment with one of our team of Consultant Gynaecologists, who can help diagnose and treat your condition.

Pelvic ultrasound scans are an important part of women’s health care and are used by medical specialists to investigate and diagnose a range of gynaecological symptoms.

We look at the structure of your uterus, womb and ovaries to provide highly accurate, high-resolution images for conditions such as:

  • Abnormal bleeding patterns, including heavy periods and amenorrhea (absence of periods)
  • Pelvic pain
  • PCOS
  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Detailed assessment of your ovarian function and cysts, masses or polyps, or symptoms of ovarian cancer
  • Fertility investigations, including ovarian function, egg production and release, examining the corpus luteum (which releases hormones to support embryo development)
  • Investigations during perimenopause and menopause
  • Checking the fallopian tubes as part of fertility investigations
  • Help to guide the smooth removal and insertion of Mirena coils and other intrauterine devices (IUDs)

We usually carry out transvaginal scans – these allow our ultrasound specialist to capture images in high resolution and with greater accuracy than an abdominal scan.

Once you’re lying comfortably in the examination chair, a slim probe is gently inserted in your vagina. The probe is covered in gel and doesn’t usually cause any discomfort.

The sound waves emitted by the probe allow us to access images of your internal organs, including those deep in the pelvic region. If you prefer, we are also able to carry out abdominal scans, although we don’t usually recommend them for gynaecological investigations.

Your appointment will take between 30-60 minutes, depending on your condition. This gives us plenty of time to make sure you’re comfortable and to talk through your symptoms, and answer any questions you may have.

We will explain the images that appear on the screen and talk to you about the results. We will advise you on any further tests or appointments you may need, so that you have a clear idea of what steps to take next.

Our ultrasound specialist Ms Ciara McKenna is part of our team of women’s health specialists, including leading Consultant Gynaecologists and GPs with expert knowledge of gynaecological conditions.

Should you wish, she can advise on making an appointment with an appropriate member of our team. They can discuss your diagnosis and create a bespoke treatment plan, based on your results and a detailed consultation.

We have Consultant Gynaecologists who are experts in perimenopause and menopause. Some are also advanced practitioners in ultrasound technology and can carry out a scan during your consultation, or you can have your scan with our ultrasound specialist, Ms Ciara McKenna, who is an expert in women’s health.

The scan will enable us to check your ovarian reserve, and whether or not you are still ovulating. If you are already on HRT and still having difficulties, it can help to monitor and adjust your dosage, and to check any abnormal bleeding.

Information from the scan and a simple blood test will help ascertain whether or not you have entered menopause, and together with a detailed consultation about your symptoms, can provide our specialists with vital information about your condition.

Our Consultant Gynaecologists can then help create a bespoke treatment plan to manage and treat your symptoms. They can advise you on the next steps to take, which might include HRT, carefully targeted lifestyle changes or other medication.

You can be reassured that you will have a diagnosis as quickly as possible, with no long waits for an appointment and no referral needed. Our ultrasounds are carried out by renowned clinicians, who are specialists in their field, and all have many years’ experience in world-class London teaching hospitals. They can carry out highly accurate scans, using the latest in 3D and 4D ultrasound technology, and can advise you immediately on your condition and create a personalised treatment pathway, according to your individual needs.

Ovarian cancer is the sixth most common cancer among women in the UK, and it mainly affects women over the age of 50. Signs are not easy to spot, so if you are concerned about irregular symptoms – such as bloating or a painful abdomen – or have a family history of cancer, a detailed pelvic ultrasound scan can help put your mind at ease.

It is carried out by a highly trained Consultant Gynaecologist, who will check for any abnormalities in your ovaries, as well as examine your womb, fallopian tubes and the surrounding structures.

As the scan is carried out by a consultant, you can also have a detailed discussion about any worrying symptoms, and they can look out for changes or cysts in your ovaries, provide you with a comprehensive report and discuss any issues that are of concern.
