Gynaecology Ultrasound Scans

We offer cutting edge gynaecology ultrasound scans for a range of symptoms and conditions. You will always be seen by our senior sonographer, who is part of our women’s health team, and works closely with our highly skilled Consultant Gynaecologists and medical specialists.

When should I have a gynaecology ultrasound scan?

It can be worrying and debilitating if you are suffering from gynaecological symptoms - such as abnormal bleeding, recurring pelvic pain or fertility issues. The first step is often to have an ultrasound scan to help diagnose your condition and begin a carefully worked out treatment plan.

We have fast access appointments available with no referrals needed. Your scans and a detailed report are immediately available for either your GP or specialist to access digitally or you can make an appointment with one of our team of Consultant Gynaecologists, who can help diagnose and treat your condition.

What is a gynaecological ultrasound scan used to investigate?

Pelvic ultrasound scans are an important part of women’s health care and are used by medical specialists to investigate and diagnose a range of gynaecological symptoms.

We look at the structure of your uterus, womb and ovaries to provide highly accurate, high resolution images for conditions such as:

  • abnormal bleeding patterns, including heavy periods and amenorrhea (absence of periods)
  • Pelvic pain
  • PCOS
  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Detailed assessment of your ovarian function and cysts, masses or polyps, or symptoms of ovarian cancer
  • Fertility investigations - ovarian function, egg production and release, examining the corpus luteum (which releases hormones to support embryo development)
  • Investigations during perimenopause and menopause
  • Checking the Fallopian tubes as part of fertility investigations
  • Help to guide the smooth removal and insertion of Mirena coils and other intrauterine devices (IUDs)

What happens during a gynaecological ultrasound scan

We usually carry out transvaginal scans - these allow our specialist sonographer to capture images in high resolution and with greater accuracy than an abdominal scan.

Once you’re lying comfortably in the examination chair, your sonographer will insert a slim probe smoothly in your vagina. The probe is covered in gel and doesn’t usually cause any discomfort.

The sound waves emitted by the probe allows us to access images of your internal organs, including those deep with the pelvic region. If you prefer, we are also able to carry out abdominal scans, although we don’t usually recommend them for gynaecological investigations.

How long does a gynaecological ultrasound scan last?

Your appointment will last between 30-60 minutes, depending on your condition. This gives us plenty of time to make sure you’re comfortable and to talk through your symptoms, and answer any questions you may have.

What happens after a gynaecological ultrasound scan

Your sonographer will explain the images that appear on the screen and talk to you about the results. She will advise you on any further tests or appointments that may be needed, so that you have a clear idea of what steps to take next.
