Fertility Ultrasound Scans

Plan for your future with a detailed fertility ultrasound scan at our London clinic, performed by one of our leading Consultant Gynaecologists.

Private ultrasound scans for fertility

It can be worrying if you have been struggling with infertility, and we deeply understand the importance of finding clear answers on your path to parenthood.

Whether you’re trying to conceive now or considering starting a family, an ultrasound scan for fertility can give you a clear overview of your reproductive health. Our expert Consultant Gynaecologists can provide a detailed consultation and a state-of-the-art ultrasound scan during the same appointment, with a fast and accurate diagnosis that can help you plan for the future.

Fertility ultrasound scans: FAQs

It can be a frustrating and emotionally exhausting experience if you’re trying to conceive and are not getting pregnant. We offer comprehensive scans using the latest in 3D and 4D technology to help you understand what’s going on and give you the clarity you need to make decisions around what to do next.

A fertility ultrasound can also be useful if you wish to have children in the future and want accurate information about your fertility. Knowledge can be hugely empowering, especially if you are over 35, or are considering assisted reproduction, such as IUI or IVF. A detailed scan can help your specialist plan the next stages of your treatment.

Using the latest in ultrasound technology, we will carry out a comprehensive assessment of your ovaries, womb (uterus) and fallopian tubes. For example, conditions such as endometriosis, blockages in the fallopian tubes, or fibroids can be a barrier to conception, and may need to be treated.

We will have a detailed look at your ovarian reserve – this will deliver a clear picture of the capacity of your ovaries to produce eggs that are capable of fertilisation. We will also look at follicle development on your ovaries, at your ovulation patterns, and be able to identify the best times for you to conceive during your cycle.

Once we know about any of these factors, our integrated women’s health team can help you create a personalised fertility plan that feels right for you.

Our appointments are around 30 minutes, so that there is plenty of time to discuss your medical and fertility history. Almost all our gynaecological scans are transvaginal, allowing us to obtain the most accurate picture of your ovaries, womb and pelvic area.

During the ultrasound, you’ll be asked to lie back in the examination chair and a gel-covered slim probe will be gently inserted into your vagina. You should feel no pain, just minor movements of the probe as we carefully examine your pelvic region, capturing detailed images in 3D and 4D.

We will talk you through what we see on the screen and also leave time for discussion and questions afterwards.

Our fertility expert Mr Venkatesh Subramanian is a senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, specialising in reproductive medicine at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He is a leading clinician in the investigation, diagnosis and management of infertility.

During the scan, Mr Subramanian will carry out a comprehensive assessment of your ovaries, womb (uterus) and fallopian tubes. For example, conditions such as endometriosis or fibroids can be a common barrier to conception and may need to be treated.

Mr Subramanian will also check your ovarian reserve, ovulation patterns, and examine the health of your womb. Using 3D and 4D technology, he will be able to assess whether you are ovulating regularly. A pelvic ultrasound scan is often the single most important step towards detecting the cause of infertility, and he will be able to offer expert guidance on the next steps that are necessary.

Blockages in the fallopian tubes – preventing eggs from travelling from the ovaries to the womb – are a common cause of infertility. However, they often don’t cause any symptoms and require a specialist ultrasound investigation known as Hysterosalpingo Contrast Sonography (HyCoSy) to identify them.

Mr Subramanian is highly experienced in carrying out HyCosy tests, which involve using an ultrasound scan and a special dye or foam to examine the uterus and fallopian tubes. He is a specialist in diagnosing fallopian tube patency using this procedure. If a potential blockage is identified, Mr Subramanian can help you decide on any further tests, such as a laparoscopy, and create a tailored plan to treat the condition.

We work as part of an integrated women’s health team and if further tests or investigations are needed we can advise you on the necessary next steps to take.

For example, an additional blood test might help provide a more detailed evaluation of your ovarian reserve and function. We can also refer you to one of our team of Consultant Gynaecologists, including our fertility expert, who specialises in assisted reproduction, endometriosis, fibroids, fallopian tube patency and early menopause.

Many reproductive problems don’t cause any noticeable symptoms, and women may not realise they have an issue until they have trouble conceiving. A fertility ultrasound scan carried out by a highly experienced specialist with expertise in women’s health can be a vital first step in accurately assessing your reproductive health.
