Consultant-Led Gynaecology Ultrasound Scans
It can be worrying if you have been suffering for a while with gynaecological symptoms such as abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, or infertility, or with menopause symptoms such as hot flushes and joint pain.
Here at the Medical Chambers Kensington, we have expert Consultant Gynaecologists who can provide a detailed consultation together with a state-of-the art ultrasound scan during the same appointment. This can help provide fast and accurate diagnosis and treatment for a range of women’s health conditions.
When should I have a consultant-led gynaecology ultrasound scan?
It can sometimes prove difficult to diagnose and treat conditions such as infertility or endometriosis, and many women end up ‘putting up’ with symptoms for months or years.
We have Consultant Gynaecologists who are experts in the use of ultrasound technology, and during your appointment will carry out a comprehensive pelvic scan, reporting on the findings and discussing your symptoms during an in-depth consultation.
A consultant-led ultrasound can be hugely empowering and is an important first step towards diagnosing a range of gynaecological symptoms and working out a bespoke treatment plan, tailored to your individual needs. Our consultants are also part of an integrated women’s health team and can refer you to one of our other specialists or order further investigations when needed.
What conditions can a consultant-led gynaecology ultrasound scan help to investigate?
We carry out transvaginal pelvic ultrasounds in the majority of cases, and this includes advanced 3D and 4D technology. This means we examine the structure of your uterus, womb and ovaries to provide accurate, high resolution images for conditions such as:
- Abnormal bleeding patterns, including heavy periods and amenorrhea (absence of periods):
- Pelvic pain
- PCOS
- Fibroids
- Endometriosis
Ultrasound scans can also help to:
- Provide a detailed assessment of your ovarian function and cysts, masses or polyps, or symptoms of ovarian cancer
- Examine ovarian function, egg production and release, examining the corpus luteum (which releases hormones to support embryo development) as part of a comprehensive fertility assessment
- Investigate perimenopause and menopause symptoms
- Check the Fallopian tubes using HiCosy, as part of fertility investigations
- Guide the smooth removal and insertion of Mirena coils and other intrauterine devices (IUDs)
What are the benefits of a consultant-led gynaecology scan
You can be reassured that you will have a diagnosis as quickly as possible, with no long waits for an appointment and no referral needed. Our consultant-led ultrasounds are carried out by renowned clinicians, who are specialists in their field, and all have many years experience in world class London teaching hospitals.
They can carry out highly accurate scans, using the latest in 3D and 4D ultrasound technology, and can advise you immediately on your condition, and create a carefully individualised treatment pathway, according to your needs.
Consultant-led fertility ultrasound scans
Our fertility expert Mr Venkatesh Subramanian is a senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, specialising in reproductive medicine at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He is a leading clinician in the investigation, diagnosis and management of infertility.
During the scan Mr Subramanian will carry out a comprehensive assessment of your ovaries, womb (uterus) and fallopian tubes. For example, conditions such as endometriosis or fibroids can be a common barrier to conception and may need to be treated.

He will also check your ovarian reserve, ovulation patterns, and examine the health of your womb. Using 3D and 4D technology, he will be able to assess whether you are ovulating regularly. A pelvic ultrasound scan is often the single most important step towards detecting the cause of infertility and he will be able to offer expert guidance on the next steps that are necessary.
How can a fertility ultrasound scan using HyCoSy help identify blocked fallopian tubes?
Blockages in the fallopian tubes - preventing eggs from travelling from the ovaries to the womb - are a common cause of infertility. However, they often don’t cause any symptoms and require a specialist ultrasound investigation known as Hysterosalpingo Contrast Sonography (HyCoSy) to identify them.
Mr Subramanian, is highly experienced in carrying out HyCosy tests, which involve using an ultrasound scan and a special dye or foam to examine the uterus and fallopian tubes. He is a specialist in diagnosing fallopian tube patency using this procedure. If a potential blockage is identified, Mr Subramanian can help you decide on further tests, such as a laparoscopy, and create a tailored plan to treat the condition.
How can a consultant-led pelvic ultrasound help with menopause symptoms?
We have Consultant Gynaecologists who are experts in perimenopause and menopause. Some are also advanced practitioners in ultrasound technology and can carry out a scan during your consultation, or they can refer you to our specialist sonographer, Ms Ciara McKenna, who is an expert in women’s health.
The scan will enable us to check your ovarian reserve, and whether or not you are still ovulating. If you are already on HRT and still having difficulties, it can help to monitor and adjust your dosage, and to check any abnormal bleeding.
Information from the scan and a simple blood test will help ascertain whether or not you have entered menopause, and together with a detailed consultation about your symptoms, can provide our specialists with vital information about your condition.
Our Consultant Gynaecologists can then help create a bespoke treatment plan to manage and treat your symptoms. They can advise you on the next steps to take, which might include HRT, or carefully tailored lifestyle changes.
Private pelvic ultrasound scan for ovarian screening
Ovarian cancer is the sixth most common cancer among women in the UK and it mainly affects women over the age of 50. Signs are not easy to spot, so if you are concerned about irregular symptoms - such as bloating or a painful abdomen - or have a family history of cancer, a detailed pelvic ultrasound scan carried out by a highly trained consultant who is an expert in women’s health can help put your mind at ease.
They will check for any abnormalities in your ovaries, as well as examine your womb, fallopian tubes and the surrounding structures.
As the scan is carried out by a consultant, you can also have a detailed discussion about any worrying symptoms, and they can look out for changes or cysts in your ovaries, provide you with a detailed report and discuss any issues that are of concern.
