Private pregnancy scans in London

Pregnancy is one of the most significant times in your life, and having the right support and advice is important to keep you and your baby healthy.

As part of our comprehensive pregnancy care, we offer specialist pregnancy ultrasound scans and screening at our private London clinic. Our highly experienced senior ultrasound specialist – Ms Ciara McKenna – and our team of Consultant Gynaecologists are here to support you throughout every stage of your pregnancy. Whether you are looking for reassurance with an early pregnancy scan, or prenatal screening with the most advanced non-invasive prenatal tests (NIPTs), we provide expert care tailored to you and your baby.

Expert pregnancy and prenatal care

We offer a full range of pregnancy ultrasound scans at every stage of pregnancy, all performed by our highly experienced senior ultrasound specialist, a leading expert in prenatal scanning.

Our pregnancy scans include:

Each scan is designed to monitor your baby’s development, provide reassurance, and support you throughout your pregnancy journey.

Pregnancy ultrasound scans provide important information about your baby’s growth, development and wellbeing at key stages during pregnancy.

Scans can help to:

  • Confirm your pregnancy and estimate your due date
  • Monitor your baby’s growth and development
  • Check your baby’s heartbeat and movements
  • Check for signs of potential developmental or chromosomal conditions that may require further investigation
  • Assess the position of the placenta, amniotic fluid and umbilical cord

Ultrasound scans are considered safe for both you and your baby during pregnancy and play an important role in helping your healthcare team provide the best possible care throughout your pregnancy, labour and beyond.

Many parents also find that scans offer valuable reassurance and an opportunity to feel more connected to their baby during pregnancy.

You usually won’t need to do anything specific before your appointment, but we recommend arriving on time so you have plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns with your sonographer.

For a transvaginal scan, you may find it more comfortable to wear loose-fitting clothing, as you will be asked to undress from the waist down. We will give you a gown to wear during the scan, for your comfort and privacy.

If you are having an abdominal scan it can help to wear clothing that can easily be moved or lifted to give the sonographer access to your abdomen during your appointment.

If there is anything specific you need to do before your scan, our team will let you know in advance.

If you are having a transvaginal scan, which is most common in early pregnancy, you will be given a gown and asked to undress from the waist down. You will then be invited to lie back on the examination chair while the sonographer gently inserts a slim ultrasound probe into your vagina. The probe is covered for hygiene and comfort, and the scan should not cause you discomfort.

For abdominal pregnancy scans, usually performed from around 12 weeks onwards, our sonographer will apply a small amount of gel to your abdomen before gently moving the ultrasound probe across your skin.

During both types of scan, you will usually be able to see images of your baby on screen while the specialist explains what they are looking at, and discusses your baby’s development with you.

You can arrange a pregnancy scan from around 5 weeks of pregnancy, calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period.

After your initial scan, your sonographer can advise you on the most appropriate timing for any further scans during your pregnancy.

The scans we would always recommend during pregnancy are:

  • The 12-week nuchal translucency scan
  • The 20-week anomaly scan

Many women have their main scans (12-week and 20-week scans) through the NHS. They might also choose to have additional scans for reassurance at a private clinic – including early pregnancy scans, growth scans, and welfare scans that are not routinely offered under NHS care.

Why choose our private London clinic?

Our clinicians are leading experts in their field, providing exceptional patient care with no long waiting lists. Our ultrasound specialist and senior Consultant Gynaecologist work as an integrated team, offering a holistic approach at our state-of-the-art private London clinic.

Our ultrasound specialist, Ms Ciara McKenna, is renowned for her expertise in women’s health and fetal ultrasound. She has extensive experience at London’s leading NHS trusts and is the former head of obstetric and gynaecology ultrasound at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea NHS Hospital.

Most pregnancy scans at our clinic – including early pregnancy and viability scans – take around 30 minutes. 12-week and 20-week scans can take up to an hour, particularly if a more detailed assessment is needed, or if you are expecting twins or multiples.

We allow plenty of time for your appointment so you can feel relaxed, ask questions, and fully understand what your specialist is seeing during the scan.

The anomaly scan, also known as the 20-week scan, is a detailed assessment of your baby’s development and anatomy.

During the scan, your sonographer will carefully examine and measure your baby’s:

  • Head and brain
  • Face and spine
  • Heart and major organs
  • Abdomen and kidneys
  • Arms, legs, hands and feet

Your baby’s growth and development will also be assessed, alongside measurements of the placenta, amniotic fluid and umbilical cord.

This scan checks for signs of certain structural or developmental conditions and can give you vital information about your baby’s health and development. Depending on your baby’s position, we can offer 3D and 4D imaging during your appointment.

You will receive a report within 24 hours of your scan, as well as a link to your images (3D and 4D) so you can share them with family and friends.

Depending on the stage of your pregnancy, you may simply continue with your routine antenatal care or arrange any recommended follow-up scans for reassurance and ongoing monitoring.

Even when everything is as expected, pregnancy scans remain an important way of monitoring your baby’s continued growth and wellbeing throughout pregnancy.

If your scan or prenatal screening results suggest there may be an increased likelihood of a developmental or chromosomal condition, your sonographer will talk you through the findings carefully and sensitively during your appointment.

You may be offered additional tests or referred for further assessment with a fetal medicine specialist. Any next steps will depend on the type of finding, how clear the results are, and where you are in your pregnancy.

We understand that receiving unexpected news when you’re expecting a baby can feel worrying and overwhelming. Our experienced team is here to provide clear information, answer your questions, and support you in making informed decisions at every stage of your pregnancy.

Non-invasive prenatal tests (NIPTs) are advanced prenatal screening tests that assess the likelihood of certain chromosomal conditions, using a simple blood sample taken from your arm.

These tests do not increase your risk of miscarriage and can screen for conditions including:

  • Down’s syndrome (Trisomy 21)
  • Edwards’ syndrome (Trisomy 18)
  • Patau’s syndrome (Trisomy 13)

NIPTs can usually be performed from as early as 9 weeks of pregnancy, and we will be able to send you your results within 3–10 working days, depending on the test you’ve opted for.

If we recommend further investigations, our experienced team will explain your results clearly, and help you to make the right decisions for further tests based around your preferences.

Many parents choose to find out the sex of their baby during the 20-week anomaly scan.

If this is your preference your sonographer will be able to tell you whether you are expecting a boy or a girl at this scan, provided your baby is in a position that allows a clear view. Just let your sonographer know at the beginning of your scan that you’d like to find out the sex of your baby, if possible.

Yes, we can provide these for you. After your appointment, you will receive a secure link allowing you to download the images captured during your scan.

Many parents choose to keep these as special memories, or share them with family and friends.

Transvaginal ultrasound scans are commonly performed during early pregnancy because they provide clearer and more detailed images than abdominal scans in the first few weeks of pregnancy.

During the scan, your sonographer will insert a slim ultrasound probe into your vagina to obtain detailed images of your pregnancy. The procedure is safe, and does not increase the risk of miscarriage.

Every pregnancy is different, so the questions you have will often be specific to your particular experience and concerns.

More general questions you may wish to ask might include:

  • Is my baby developing as expected?
  • Can you see the heartbeat clearly?
  • Is everything looking as expected at this stage?
  • Can you tell whether I’m having a boy or a girl?
  • Are my baby’s measurements within the expected range?

Your sonographer will always aim to answer your questions clearly and sensitively, to help you feel informed and reassured throughout your appointment.

Yes. Multiple pregnancy scans usually require additional scanning time and assessment, so there is an additional fee of £70 for twin or triplet pregnancies. You can look at our pregnancy ultrasound fees here

What our patients say about us

I am so glad I found Miss Adib. For the first time, I truly felt heard and finally received clear answers. Her extensive experience has helped me enormously. After steroids failed to help, her PRP treatment has significantly improved my condition.

The whole experience I had of my visit to The Medical Chambers was of the highest quality. Indeed the service in advance of my visit was highly efficient and the same can be said of the service I received at The Chambers. I have known Dr Weatherall for a number of years and in my opinion as a Neurologist specialising in migraine and chronic headache I think he is without parallel.

The appointment with Dr. Weatherall was more informative than any other headache specialist visit we’ve had. He conducted a thorough assessment of my daughter and clearly explained his recommended next steps. He gave us confidence in her current treatment and also suggested additional options, such as a specific neuromodulation device. Although I’ve done extensive reading and much of the information wasn’t entirely new to us, it was extremely helpful to hear his professional evaluation of specific treatments based on his experience and expertise. I am very glad we saw Dr. Weatherall and would wholeheartedly recommend him.
