Ear, nose and throat problems affect adults and children alike. While GPs can deal with many non-complex conditions, specialist care is sometimes needed when usual treatments haven’t worked as well as you would like.

Many people ignore persistent ear, nose and throat symptoms, mistakenly believing that nothing can be done. But symptoms such as a continuous cough, snoring or dizziness can be treated successfully with specialist intervention.

A wide range of ear problems can benefit from specialist advice, including persistent ear infections, loss of hearing, noises in the ear (tinnitus) and vertigo. Meniere’s disease, for example, is thought to result from swelling or a build-up of fluid in the inner ear, and causes unpleasant symptoms of vertigo with hearing loss that comes and goes, tinnitus and a sensation of fullness in the ear.

If you experience on-going problems with earache, ear discharge, hearing loss or balance problems, your GP may suggest an ENT referral.

Nose problems can result from inflammation (rhinitis) causing annoying symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, itching and discharge which may run down the back of your throat. Our ENT specialists can determine whether you have an allergic or non-allergic rhinitis, identify any allergic triggers, and recommend a range of treatment options.

As the nasal and sinus linings are connected, inflammation of one usually accompanies the other. If not treated, your symptoms may progress to cause sinusitis with facial pain, feelings of pressure, thick secretions and a reduced ability to smell (anosmia).

Once your sinusitis has lasted for more than 12 weeks, it is diagnosed as chronic sinusitis. An ENT surgeon can inspect the inside of the nose to confirm signs of swelling and identify any nasal polyps or structural abnormalities such as a deviated nasal septum.

ENT specialists can help if you have problems in the throat that cause snoring, or which affect your ability to speak, sing, eat or swallow.

If you are experiencing persistent hoarseness that has lasted for longer than 3 weeks, it’s important to seek medical help. Over 2,000 new laryngeal cancers are diagnosed each year in the UK, and the most common symptom is persistent hoarseness, sometimes accompanied by throat pain.

If you discover an unexplained lump in your neck or throat, this should also be investigated as soon as possible, to find out the cause and to get it treated, if necessary. Over 2,500 new cases of thyroid cancer are diagnosed each year in the UK, and these usually present as a nodule within the thyroid gland, or as general thyroid swelling.
